The Academy of Kung Fu in California has been serving Tarzana community since 1996. Our system, Peaceful Mind Way, is built on a foundation based in Chinese Kung Fu. Our martial arts is influenced by the philosophies, techniques and forms taught in the ancient temples of Wutang & Shaolin.

We are a school not only of body, but of mind and spirit. Philosophy, which is neither incongruent nor conflicting with anyone's personal religion, is crucial for balanced training. It helps align the student with the self and brings clarity of purpose. Individuals who are philosophically oriented are more likely to handle conflict peacefully and confidently.

There is an old saying:
"To Strike Another is to Defeat Yourself"

We respect that thought and hope there will be very few times when hurting someone is our only answer.

Though we train to be warriors, we are clearly not a school of fighters, but rather, individuals on a path developing confidence and the skill to resolve problems without physical conflict.

We offer an astounding amount of knowledge to those who seek it. But, what's really important to us is that we are a family oriented school that prides itself on a friendly atmosphere where teachers sincerely guide and mentor. We encourage this very personal environment and have always maintained the thought that students learn profoundly better when they are not under stress or fear.

It remains our goal at the Academy to provide a school that remains here for your needs whether you may be training for health, personal improvement, self defense, or just to have a great time.

ADULT PROGRAM

Our Adult Program offers an astounding amount of knowledge to those who seek it, encompassing practical self defense techniques, philosophy and fitness.

 

SELF DEFENSE TECHINQUES

WUTANG MOUNTAIN KUNG FU
Wutang Kung Fu focuses on trapping your opponent. With names like Hawk, Tiger Springs from Den and Dragon, these techniques are remarkable sources for learning and mastering crucial self defense principles. The techniques are very short and extremely effective for personal protection.

SHAOLIN KUNG FU
Shaolin forms are another aspect of our training. Forms, fighting techniques linked together in a kind of fighter's dance, help to develop muscle memory, hand-eye coordination and focus. Some of these forms date back almost 1000 years.

CHIN-NA (JOINT LOCKS & MANIPULATION)
Chin-Na is the study of how to control your opponent using joint locks to limit mobility. Chin-Na also teaches how to attack pressure points and other sensitive parts of the body with strikes, grabs and other techniques.

Chinese Chin-Na is the root of the Japanese arts of Jujitsu and Aikido, and practitioners use the study of Chin-Na to increase understanding of the theory and principles of their own arts.

CHI SAO (STICKY HAND KUNG FU)
There are many names for this training and hundreds of styles employ it in their programs. It's a wonderful art where opponents play for superior position and find the perfect opportunity to push (or attack) your opponent.

More important than how to kick and punch is when to use physical force and what level of force to use. Not all attacks are kill moves. Learn how to use your skill for different purposes and how to avoid conflict in the first place.

Even the monks in the Chinese temples had fun. And so must we. Our school offers a safe, appropriate and friendly atmosphere in which to learn this exciting art. The Academy is a member's exclusive facility and requires application approval. This ensures that the training environment is comfortable for everyone.

DON'T PULL A MUSCLE!
In today's lifestyle, many people can't risk hardcore martial arts training and injury. Our style accommodates all fitness levels because of the emphasis on health and body mechanics. Like many of our long-time students, we want you to train with us for years and decades.

 

ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS

TAI CHI
Tai chi is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. In tai chi, each movement flows into the next. 

COMBAT TAI CHI / PUSH HANDS
Learn how the traditional, seemingly tranquil movements of T'ai Chi Ch'uan can be used effectively for close-contact fighting. The Mandarin term "t'ai chi ch'uan" literally translates as "supreme ultimate fist."

WEAPONS
T'ai Chi Sword, staff, wind and fire wheels, cane and rope are just a few of the weapons presented in our curriculum.

SEMINARS & WORKSHOPS
Throughout the year, we offer seminars such as the the Spring Festival and specialized workshops for Fighting, Chi Kung, Forms and more.

The Academy of Kung Fu offers an outstanding program carefully designed to give your child the tools to succeed in life. Your child will enjoy personal attention in a fun, traditional martial arts atmosphere where our instructors encourage and motivate through positive reinforcement. 

 

BENEFITS FOR YOUR CHILD

SELF-DISCIPLINE: Developing their minds and concentration by thinking their way through drills and learning self-defense concepts and strategies.

RESPECT: Everyone is taught control, always bow to each other and learn to follow the instructions of the teacher.

CONFIDENCE: We help to build confidence and character by providing the necessary skills to stand up to peer pressure and other intimidating situations.

FITNESS & COORDINATION: Developing muscular and mental co-ordination while burning excess energy and conditioning their bodies through exercises, stretching and drills.

ACHIEVEMENT: A sense of accomplishment is developed as each student moves to a higher level of belt. Training for these tests and passing them enhance the ability to concentrate and overcome any learning hurdles.

PHILOSOPHY

KUNG FU CAMP & WORKSHOPS
During school breaks and/or weekends, we offer kung fu camp and workshops for kids.

RECITALS
Throughout the year, children in our program may perform in a recital or exhibition. Family and friends are invited to attend.

T'ai Chi Cuan & Chi Kung

UNDERSTANDING TAI CHI 

Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow manner. Forms and exercises include rhythmic patterns of movement that are coordinated with breathing. 

The concentration required for tai chi forces you to live in the present moment, putting aside distressing thoughts and helping you achieve a sense of inner calm. 
 

TAI CHI FORMS - consists of a sequence of movements performed slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them.

TAI CHI EXERCISES - we train exercises from Tai Chi, outside of the forms, to focus on different aspects of wellness. This also allows new students to learn basic moves and gain the health benefits from Tai Chi without having to remember an entire form.


WHO CAN DO TAI CHI 

Tai Chi is available to everyone, regardless of ability, age, belief system or life circumstances. Our forms and exercises are gentle, low impact and suitable for everyone. You may also find tai chi appealing because it requires no special equipment and can be done indoors or out, alone or in a group, or sitting in a chair. 

WHY GIVE TAI CHI A TRY 

Tai chi can help reduce stress by bringing mind and body together in a calm state. During class, you focus on movement and breathing. Stress, anxiety and tension melt away as you focus on the present. The effects may last well after class is done. 

Despite its long history, tai chi has been studied scientifically only in recent years. Preliminary evidence suggests that tai chi offers numerous benefits beyond stress reduction, including:

 

  • Reducing anxiety and depression
  • Improving flexibility and muscle strength
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Relieving chronic pain
  • Increasing energy, endurance and agility
  • Improving overall feelings of well-being

 

GETTING STARTED WITH TAI CHI 

Our qualified instructors will help you gain the full benefits of Tai Chi. Learn proper techniques and discover the underlying philosophy and history from knowledgeable instructors. We can show you how to practice tai chi safely, especially if you have an injury or chronic condition. Many of our students enjoy the social and friendly group setting as well!

Grandmaster Steve Pisa

Grandmaster Steve Pisa is fifth generation Martial Artist under the lineage of Grandmaster Yoon. Before Grandmaster Yoon, in China, there are many generations that proceed us. Ours is a lineage that is rich with history and knowledge! Grandmaster Pisa has had well over 30 years of martial art training to accomplish this. Not an easy task. Even though he broke both ankles to near amputation, he fought back through hundreds of doctors appointments and various surgeries to even walk. He kept striving ... he never gave up. It's this part -- his courage -- that instigated my desire to promote him to such a high rank. Grandmaster Don Baird
